Many say that Piha was the first place to be surfed in New Zealand, on what were then state of the art modern surfboards, back in the late 1950's. Since then Piha has become a popular beach, enjoyed by thousands of people every year. Add to that an increasing permanent population and increasing numbers of holiday homes being built, and the pressure on Piha is immense.

Last year saw the Surfing Nationals held at Piha and in January 2010 a World Juniors event will also be held there, a first for New Zealand. Piha has also been nominated by New Zealand surfing interests including Surfbreak Protection for the Save the Waves World Surfing Reserves programme.(see news page item).

Quality of the environment is a key aspect for the quality of our surfing experience. Issues such as water quality, sand dunes management, rubbish and traffic all affect our enjoyment of Piha.

See the details of a community open day on 18th October 2009. Have your say on the future of Piha.
