In a big swell on a crowded day boats traversing the bar create situations much more dangerous than this. in 2005 the harbourmaster sent the police out in a heavy swell to attemp to arrest surfers in the channel. It was the middle of a fishing contest. comming back a large majority of the skippers crossing the bar were blind drunk, and could not stand on their own two feet when they stepped onto Terra Firma. yet the cops focussed on the surfers in the channel..

these birds travel up to the arctic to breed, and travel all the way back to New Zealand, and you guessed it, one of their stops is little old Whangamata. here they are feeding on the Kaimoana beds, they love to feed on the waterline, which is to be disected with a rock walled chanel, goodbye godwits, all this for 205 berths... how much pressure can we afford on our eco systems?

When the Marina Society paid for civil engineering company to do a study which includes a hydrological survey this is what we get! hey presto! We can build a marina on Mars if you have enough money, getting civil engineers to do a hydrological study is a bit like getting a rocket scientist to do Brain surgery!

This Photo shows the Marina site, (middle right) downstream from the Sewerage pond (bottom left) which leaks between 2,000 22,000 litres of the raw stuff each day. and now the pond has been given a thirty year extension! Considering that Marina's are known to act like Magnets for pollution, not just from their own activities, but from surrounding land run off, it is bizzare to even contemplate putting a Marina here, if for no other reason than this. The Brown sediment at the Marina site is not caused by Mangroves, it is mostly sewerage. the Mangroves are just feeding off the excrement.
