    Protection for Surfbreaks – NZCPS Policy 1813 Jul 10

    In May we reported that the long awaited NZ Coastal Policy Statement (NZCPS) had been leaked by one of the Board of Inquiry (BOI) members Philip Woollaston. The Minister of Conservation had been sitting on the new policy, recommended by the BOI, for nearly a year and had denied Surfbreak Protection's request for release of the report under the Official Information Act.

    Recent comments by West Coast surfers near Auckland suggest that the popular Piha reform (ditch) has almost completely disappeared. The local community is working on this issue but this popular beach seems to have lost one of it's more colourful breaks.

    Monitoring raises concerns over Bar and Tidal Jet performance. Last week Whangamata Camping Association and Surfbreak Protection Society members met in Whangamata, mainly to study all the Bar surveys that have been conducted as part of a monitoring programme to help determine whether the Marina channel dredging has changed the profile of the bar and degraded the quality of this iconic wave.
